6 Ways to Make Money as a Stay-at-home Mom

Have you ever considered finding ways to make a bit of extra money on the side? I for one, can't imagine re-joining the rat race for a typical 9-5 job!

A recent Gallup poll revealed that more stay-at-home moms report experiencing depression, sadness and anger than moms who work outside of the home.

Imagine doing something rewarding, giving you additional purpose (beyond raising your beautiful rugrats) whilst earning a few extra bucks on the side.

Here are our 6 top ideas for doing just that, without having to lick 12 000 stamps every week.

1. Rent out a room

Do you have a comfortable en-suite guest room and enjoy dealing with people from all over the world? Many people are renting out rooms this these days and you’d be surprised how many travellers will choose a bed in a home over a hotel every time. Visit Airbnb and BedandBreakfast for inspiration and information.

2. Start a kids crafting club

Want to earn an income while playing? Imagine being host to a group of excited and engaged tiny crafters, letting them unleash their creativity, while at the same time teaching and letting them develop developmental, emotional and problem solving skills whilst being social and having fun. Visit the Creative Crafting Club page to get everything you need to start a kids crafting club, (that works around your family's schedule!).

3. Teach a course

Likewise, if you have a super-skill and a knack for teaching, you could consider teaching a course on Udemy or Coursera. You don’t need a teaching qualification – just a serious skill that others might want to learn.

4. Sell your produce

Perhaps you have an abundance of blueberries or a special top-secret marmalade recipe… You could consider supplementing your income by selling your fresh produce or home-made goodies at a local weekend produce or craft market.

5. Start a blog and do affiliate marketing

Blogging is one of the most suitable jobs for stay-at-home-moms. As mothers, we have an inherent need to share, care, assist and the ability to dream up innovative new ideas to entertain, feed and stimulate our kids. Use those skills and build something amazing!

You are probably thinking; "but how am I going to make money blogging?" right? This is where affiliate marketing also known as a hands-free income comes in. Affiliate marketing is non intrusive because all you need to do is simply recommend the product, course or offering in your blogs or social media posts or articles in a clever way that will help solve your readers’ problems. No inventory, delivery of products or customer support!

Here are some popular networks to get you started:

  • The commission structure for the Amazon affiliate program is pretty low, but the upside is that they have an endless range so you can promote pretty much anything.
  • Recommend to your readers that they could start a kids Creative Crafting Club for extra income, flexibility and purpose. You will receive 50% commission for each conversion for 12 months.

Look for affiliates that makes sense for your niche. If you niche is Healthcare then you could for instance include:

  • iHerb offers natural supplements and herbal health solutions. Categories include supplements, herbs and homeopathy, bath & personal care, beauty, sports, grocery, kids & babies, pets, and home.
  • The Vitamin Shoppe offers a large selection of vitamins, supplements, protein shakes, superfoods, and natural remedies. You can earn up to 9% commissions on referrals.

6. Sell your knowledge

If you are an expert and have proven skills in any particular area, you could charge a fee for consulting to companies who need the exact knowledge you have.

These days, making extra money from home is not only possible, it’s actually quite easy. Choose something that naturally aligns with your skill set and interests – that way, it won’t feel like work!
