Giant Hearts Lesson Plan

Posted on Feb 11, 2021

Love is in the air!

Today we are sharing with you our Giant Hearts project - a fun and easy craft that is close to our hearts.

We do this project with our students every year on special occasions like Valentine's Day and Mother's Day and we use the opportunity to talk about love.

We asked our class of 6 year old crafters... "Who do you love? What do you love about them?"

There was a moment of pause and then the answers starting spilling out one after the other:

My dad! He gives the best hugs.

My gran! She smells like flowers.

My puppy! He's super cute.

My brother! He's my best friend.

My mom! She makes nice food.

We love talking about love through the eyes of our students.

And this lesson plan is all about celebrating that love.

Inside you'll find:

  • A supply list, what you'll need
  • Explanation of the performance super skills that will be developed
  • Step-by-step craft instructions with pictures
  • Fun themed activities
  • A relaxing wind down activity

Age recommendation:

This project is recommended for kids ages 4 to 6 with basic adult assistance. Kids ages 7 to 12 would love it too and would be able to do the project on their own.

Here’s what you’ll need:

We've listed lots of supply options below, be creative and use what you have!

  • +-A1 Brown paper or the back of wrapping paper
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch
  • String/wool
  • Glue stick or stapler
  • Embroidery needle
  • Toilet roll
  • Tape
  • Stuffing/news paper/old magazines
  • Paint supplies: Watercolour paint/Tempera watercolour cakes, Paintbrush, Water jug
  • Colouring supplies: sharpies, colour pencils, pastel crayons

What super skills will your students learn?

Imagination: Imagination is stimulated when playing and creating and this is vital for children's psychological and emotional development. They learn to understand the world in which they live and their relation to it.

This craft is fun as the kids are going to create something close to their hearts, literally and figuratively speaking. They will be making giant hearts as well as share what they love through drawing pictures and decorating their giant hearts.

Sensory: We all use our senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around us. This craft focuses on: touch and sight. Using stuffing to make the hearts puffy and drawing things on their hearts that one can see.
