How She Built a Thriving Non-Profit Bilingual Craft Club with 30+ Weekly Students...After Work!
Posted on Oct 03, 2024In this inspiring interview, Solenne from Craftorama shares how she built a successful bilingual craft club in France while working full-time. Discover how she went from a few students to over 30 weekly and learn the key strategies she used to make it happen.
From Office Routine to Crafting Success
Before launching Craftorama, Solenne worked long hours behind a computer, craving more social interaction and creativity. While her job provided stability, she felt the need for a more fulfilling pursuit.
"Before I started Craftorama, life felt pretty dull. I spent long hours staring at a computer screen with almost no daily interaction—except with my partner. My days lacked rhythm, and it was the same routine, day in and day out."
The turning point came when Solenne decided to leap into the world of crafting. Encouraged by her partner and motivated by a growing stash of supplies, she took a chance and found a charming little shop in a busy village. What started as a small idea quickly grew into a thriving part-time venture.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Opportunities
Solenne's biggest challenge was overcoming the fear of starting something new and finding a suitable location. With support from her partner and a bit of courage, she secured the ideal space. The shopfront's strategic location next to a bakery and a nursery ensured high visibility and foot traffic.
"I think I was just scared to take the leap. I struggled with finding the time and figuring out how to organize it so I could keep my job while pursuing crafting."
Smart Marketing and Gradual Growth
Solenne's initial marketing strategy was straightforward yet effective. She distributed flyers at local schools, kindergartens, and businesses. Her efforts paid off as she saw a gradual increase in students, starting with just a few and growing to over 30 weekly subscriptions. She also runs holiday sessions, which attract both regular and new students.
"I already have several signed up for next year just from word of mouth. Tomorrow is the forum of associations where clubs showcase what they offer, and it's usually when we get the most sign-ups. I'm really happy—it looks like it's going to be a promising year!"
Leveraging the CCC Curriculum
A key contributor to Craftorama's success has been Solenne’s use of the CCC lesson plan curriculum, which provided a solid foundation and saved her time on lesson preparation.
"I use many crafts from the curriculum, which have been incredibly helpful, especially during the launch. I still rely on them a year later and plan to continue using them because they are well-designed and have simple lesson plans. They’re thoughtfully created for the age groups."
While she occasionally designs her own crafts, she advises testing new ideas thoroughly to ensure they work well with kids.
"While I also create my own crafts inspired by various online sources, I advise testing them out first. Unlike the ones from CCC, online crafts may require more time or supplies than expected, so it's essential to test them beforehand."
Creating Joy
Despite not having a formal teaching background, Solenne’s experience with children and her passion for crafting made the transition smooth. She finds immense joy in seeing the excitement on her students' faces and hearing their parents’ positive feedback.
"I think the best part of the journey so far is seeing how excited and proud the children are; it gives me something to look forward to each day, provides rhythm to my life, and allows me to do what I love while giving back to the community. It’s incredibly satisfying to be the initiator of so much joy and fun, and to teach them English too."
Advice for Aspiring Craft Club Owners
Solenne’s advice to those considering starting their own craft club is clear: take the leap and don’t overthink it. Utilize the resources and support available through CCC Academy, and remember that you’re not alone. The collaborative environment and shared experiences from other members can be invaluable.
"Take the leap and stop overthinking; you’ll cross the bridge when you get there. Follow everything that CCC has laid out for you—it makes things so easy. The lesson plans, advice, and constant support from the team and other members are invaluable. With CCC, you’re not alone; you’re part of a knowledgeable, fun team that helps you stay on track and grow your club. I’m so grateful I found you!"
Starting Craftorama has given Solenne a renewed sense of purpose and pride. It has not only transformed her professional life but also allowed her to contribute meaningfully to her community.
