Top 5 Tips for Picking a Great Name for Your Club!

Posted on Aug 22, 2022

There is something magical about choosing a name for your club. Once you've decided on a name, the whole journey starts to feel more real and things start moving quickly.

Plus, it’s super fun!

The name of your club is the first thing your potential customers will hear, so you'll have to put some effort into finding a fun and appropriate one.

After going through the process ourselves, we've come up with five simple rules to make sure your club's name is the best it can be.

Grab a notebook and a pen, and let's get started.

Are you ready to take that name and run with it?

 Tip #1: EASY TO REMEMBER

This is an important one. People WILL forget the name of your club if it is not easy to remember.

If people attend your classes, they will have so much fun and will want to tell their friends about it (that goes for adults and kids!) - and if they can't remember the name, you may lose potential customers.

Make sure the name you pick is easy to remember for adults as well as for kids.

 Tip #2: EASY TO SPELL

The same goes for the spelling of your club's name: adults and (the older) kids need to be able to spell it easily.

If you are too fancy with the spelling of your name, people may struggle to find you in an online search. And people are not very patient... if they can't find you, they will move onto the next thing.

Tip #3: EASY FOR KIDS TO SAY

Make sure your students can say and pronounce the name of your club easily, especially the younger kids.

Tip: phone or meet up with your friends who have 2 or 3-year-old kids to test out whether the little ones can say the name.

 Tip #4: ASK FOR FEEDBACK

Once you've decided on a name, get some feedback to make sure it works. You can post your name in our free Facebook group and get some feedback from the community.

It's important that people understand exactly what you offer just from reading your name, and that your name is not confusing or misleading in any way.

Tip #5: GIVE YOURSELF A DEADLINE

This is arguably the most important rule. If you don’t give yourself a deadline you will brew on this for weeks... even months! Give yourself a deadline so you can make a decision and move forward.

You can always change it later down the line (it’s not the end of the world). Just don't let it hold you back from actually starting your club!

 NEXT UP: BRAINSTORMING

Now that we've gone over the 'dos' and 'don'ts', let's go ahead and get the ball rolling (and put those rules into practice!)

The first step is to brainstorm and jot down ideas as they pop up in your head. Think along the lines of anything to do with kids, imagination, or creativity.

Also try to keep in mind your specific area of focus (if you have one). Are you focusing mainly on art? Then think along the lines of paint blobs and colourful crayons. Are you going to offer craft parties? Then think along the lines of cake, clowns and balloons.

Get your family involved and have fun with it!

You could even make use of a thesaurus or the internet to find synonyms of the words you've already jotted down.

Try to find something catchy (we liked 'Creative Crafting Club' because of the alliteration).

 NARROWING IT DOWN

Before you become too attached to any of the names on your list, do a quick Google and Facebook search to check if your name is available in your area and scratch out the ones that are already taken.

Once you've written down a final list of potential names, one of two things may happen:

  • The perfect name will pop out to you, or
  • You will love them all and won't be able to pick one

 THE FINAL SELECTION

If you struggle to settle on the best one, select your top 3 favourite options and then open it up to a vote in your family.

You can even host a 'Name Picking Party' with your friends or run a poll on Facebook.

Remember your deadline! If you aren't 100% sold on a name by the time your deadline rolls around, just call it a 'working title' and use it as a place-holder for the real name that will come to you later down the line (you never know when inspiration will strike!)

Once you've chosen a name, share it with us in the community.
